Drawing Secrets Revealed: Online Drawing Instruction

This is a COLLEGE-LEVEL course that is worth your money but worded and explained to be easy for a 14-year-old to comprehend and follow.
Each lesson includes a new video that teaches you specific secrets to mastering drawing, as well as exercises and supplemental materials conveniently accessible beneath the corresponding video:

drawing lessons, getting a drawing started, drawing techniques, drawing supplies, pencil grips, shading, tone, hatching, cross hatchingLesson 1:  Getting Started

You can’t learn to draw well without a firm foundation.  In the first lesson, I lay the groundwork for a successful learning experience by showing you all the materials necessary for this course and a brief overview of why they are useful.  I also demonstrate various pencil grips and when they are needed, as this is one of the secrets to successful drawing.
I will also be sharing some shading techniques as well as important drawing secrets and tips that will help your skill improve by leaps and bounds–tips that I myself use every time I draw and paint!

drawing lessons, basic shapes, identifying basic shapes, drawing techniques, drawing a sphere, drawing a cylinder, drawing a cube, drawing a cone, drawing a pyramidLesson 2:  Basic Shapes

Become familiar with the basic shapes that are found in any composition and see in detail how to incorporate them into your drawing.  Once you train your eyes to recognize the basic shapes in a composition and learn how to shade them correctly, you will find yourself sketching a composition much more accurately and easily!

drawing lessons, block inLesson 3:  The Block-In

Discover how to get the basic outline and scale of your image placed correctly on the page when starting a drawing.  I will teach you the philosophy of the basic but often-missed concept of “start big and loose,” then only after the block-in is completed will you begin details and heavy shading. This is one of the most elusive concepts for students to grasp, and artists who miss it usually produce amateur work.  But I will teach you how.

drawing lessons, values, lights and darks, shading, shading techniques, shadowsLesson 4:  Values

In this lesson, you will learn how to correctly evaluate values (lights and darks) in your subjects and how to render them accurately on the page to make your drawings three-dimensional.  You can always tell when an artist hasn’t been trained in this concept because it shows in their work. Even if you have drawing experience, chances are very good that you will learn something new and extremely valuable in this lesson.

drawing lessons, action drawing, gesture drawingLesson 5:  Action Drawing

This lesson will enable you to recognize the dynamic movement of a figure that is the core of your drawing.  My students say this lesson was particularly useful as it helped them to loosen up and steadily break their habit of starting a drawing by putting in details too soon.  Being able to recognize the correct gesture of a figure (or even objects in a composition) will really help you in any subsequent drawings you do.

drawing lessons, relative proportions, proportions, compositions, drawing techniquesLesson 6:  Relative Proportions

In this lesson, you will learn the technique to measure and draw accurate proportions and sizes of individual objects, as well as correctly gauge proportions and distances of multiple objects in a composition.
Understanding this concept is what “separates the men from the boys” in the field of art and will help you accurately draw whatever you see.

drawing lessons, facial proportions, proportions, drawing the human face, figure drawingLesson 7:  Facial Proportions

One of the most interesting and compelling, and therefore popular, areas of art is the human face and form.  Once you have a solid foundation such as I provide in Lessons 1-6, you will be ready to continue the journey from seeing a face you want to draw to actually being able to render that likeness on the page.
This lesson includes some time-tested techniques that will help you understand the “HOW,” not just the “WHAT.”  You will also learn how to examine individual faces and make small adjustments that can be the difference between an accurate likeness and an inaccurate one.
Facial Proportions Lesson Preview:

drawing lessons, body proportions, figure drawing, drawing the human figureLesson 8:  Body Proportions

This lesson will teach you the classic proportions of the human body.  There are scientific, quantifiable methods for capturing proper human proportions for men, women, and children at different ages.  You will also learn how to draw the figure in different stances.
This fun lesson takes the mystery out of drawing the human figure.

drawing lessons, learn to grid, grid, using a grid, drawing with a grid, drawing techniquesLesson 9:  Learning to Grid

Gridding a an excellent teaching aid because it helps students see objects as abstract shapes instead of a pre-conceived idea of what they think an object looks like.  It teaches them to draw what they see, not what they know.  When you begin to perceive shapes and shadows instead of lines and objects, you will be able to tackle more detailed work such as facial features with greater ease and accuracy than you ever expected!

drawing lessons, grid, drawing with a grid, using a grid, drawing techniques, drawing the human face, figure drawingLesson 10:  Gridding the Human Face

Once you have mastered gridding facial features, you will be prepared to combine all of the elements of the human face together with greater precision. This is a technique that the great Renaissance artist Raphael used to transfer his model’s image to a larger surface area.
I demonstrate how to draw a portrait from beginning to end that will show my process.

drawing lessons, perspective, linear perspective, getting perspective right, drawing techniquesLesson 11:  Linear Perspective

Perspective does not just apply to buildings.  It reveals itself in everything we see.  And to understand the principals of perspective and render objects correctly whether they are close or far away will give your work the authority it needs to be taken seriously. Most teachers present perspective at the beginning of their instruction, but I have it toward the end because there is a necessary foundation you must build before you can proficiently incorporate perspective.

drawing lessons, composition, elements of composition, drawing a composition, drawing techniquesLesson 12:  Elements of Composition

Even having all your drawing skills mastered is no guarantee that viewers will be intrigued by your work. This lesson gives you the tools to accomplish this! ”Elements of Composition” is a basic primer to teach you how to identify and arrange interesting and compelling compositions to draw or paint.

By the end of Lesson 12, you will have all the drawing instruction you need to finish a drawing of anything you choose!

    Hello,Ms. Parks!
The other day I received an email that lead me to this site of yours, and-I must say- your course really caught my attention. I’ve been interested in taking drawing and painting classes, but time and money did not favor me. However, I do have a question to ask before making a decision: Can the videos of the course be downloaded to computer or USB after purchase? Because some online courses do not allow this for different reasons.
Your reply to this question will be deeply appreciated!
    Thank you.

Thank you so much for your comment! We’ve worked hard to produce an excellent course and are always interested in what our customers and subscribers have to say. I’m afraid currently, our videos are available only for live streaming through your browser. That may change in future, however, so definitely check back later. If you have any further questions, please let us know! (You can also use the web form on our page.)
